Following our IDMP Poetry Contest last year, we received 32 inspiring submissions from the medical physics community. To celebrate this creativity, we’ll be sharing one poem every other Wednesday as part of this new series.

Establishing a Diagnostic Center of Excellence and Recent Experience with IAEA QUAADRIL

Mercy Torshie Schandorf is a Clinical Medical Physicist and Lead Medical Physicist at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Greater Accra, Ghana. She holds an MPhil in Medical Physics from the University of Ghana and a BSc in Biomedical Physics from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. She is a certified Clinical Medical Physicist through the Allied Health Professions Council of Ghana and completed her two-year residency training at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in both radiation therapy and diagnostic medical physics.

Since joining UGMC in 2024, Mercy has led the development of comprehensive quality assurance and quality control programs for advanced imaging systems, including MRI, CT, and angiography, while advancing radiation safety and dose optimization initiatives. In 2025, she served as the Medical Physics Lead for Africa’s first IAEA QUAADRIL audit, a landmark milestone that contributed to establishing sustainable procedural frameworks for diagnostic excellence at her center.

Mercy is actively engaged in global collaboration, professional mentorship, and STEM advocacy, with a strong focus on strengthening equitable healthcare systems across sub-Saharan Africa.

Expanding Access: Strengthening Global Medical Physics.

We are proud to sponsor medical physicists from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to attend the AAPM Annual Meeting remotely. This initiative opens the door to world-class educational content, cutting-edge research, and meaningful professional connection—without the barrier of travel costs.

Over the past five years, the impact has been significant:

• 2021: 37 awardees from 37 countries
• 2022: 45 awardees from 25 countries
• 2023: 30 awardees from 13 countries
• 2024: 30 awardees from 16 countries
• 2025: 20 awardees from 11 countries

One important aspect of this program is responsible use of funds. Not all award recipients are ultimately able to attend. Since we only use funds for confirmed participants, any unused donations are carried forward to support future applicants.

For example, in 2025, remaining IBA funds from 2024 were sufficient to support 13 participants. MPWB planned to sponsor 7 additional physicists. In the end, 14 participants attended—ensuring that every dollar was used efficiently while continuing to expand access.

Each sponsored attendee represents more than a number. It means new knowledge brought back to clinics, improved patient care, and stronger medical physics communities around the world.

A Message from the New MPWB President

Dear Colleagues,

I am deeply honored to step into the role of President of Medical Physics for World Benefit (MPWB). As we close out the year, I want to wish everyone a joyful holiday season. May this time bring rest, renewal, and appreciation for the meaningful work we do together. Before looking ahead, I want to take a moment to recognize the outstanding leadership of my predecessors and the dedicated work of the board and volunteers. Their vision and commitment have strengthened MPWB’s global presence, expanded training opportunities, and fostered collaboration across continents. I am grateful to build on these strong foundations as we move into an exciting new chapter. Transitions bring both continuity and opportunity. While MPWB’s mission remains steadfast to harness medical physics expertise for global benefit our strategies evolve with the changing needs of our community and the world. My priority in this new term is to honor the momentum already created while inviting fresh ideas, perspectives, and energy to carry us forward.

At the heart of MPWB are our volunteer driven. In the years past, we have had support from colleagues all over the world, volunteering their time to advance the mission of the organization through education, outreach, mentorship, and global collaborations. As we strengthen our impact, we warmly invite volunteers to join our groups. Whether you are early in your career or a seasoned professional, your time and expertise can help shape the future of medical physics worldwide.

We are also seeking speakers for upcoming webinars, workshops, and training sessions. While many of our past webinars have been directed toward colleagues in low- and middle-income countries, it is time we also turn the spotlight on them. We want to learn from their perspectives whether through presenting research studies, sharing the realities of running a clinic in the modern radiotherapy era, or advancing education and training. Our goal is to balance the conversation by amplifying voices from LMICs alongside those from other regions. If you have insights, experiences, or innovations to share particularly those that can advance equitable access to medical physics knowledge we would be honored to feature your voice. By stepping forward, you contribute directly to our collective vision of advancing patient care through global collaboration.

Finally, this year both current and past MPWB board members attended the IUPESM World Congress in Adelaide, which drew more than 1,200 delegates from around the world. MPWB had the opportunity to host a dedicated session highlighting the organization’s progress and impact to date. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all participants for their engagement and enthusiasm during the session. Following the discussion, productive conversations were held with several regional organizations to explore ways to expand MPWB’s presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

During the session, I opened with an introduction to the organization and presented a SWOT analysis outlining MPWB’s strengths and weaknesses. The presentation also introduced the 2025 MPWB Board of Directors :Afua Yorke (USA), President; Tomas Kron (Australia), Past President; Gabriela Stroian (Canada), President-Elect; Monique Van Prooijen (Canada), Secretary/Treasurer; Navid Khaledi (Canada), Director of Communication; and Ghada Aldosary (Saudi Arabia), Director of Fundraising and Engagement and emphasized MPWB’s continued growth through collaboration, member engagement, and global partnerships.

In his presentation, Eduard Gershkevitsh, PhD (Former Director of Fundraising), reflected on the journey of building and sustaining a volunteer-driven organization, highlighting the dedication, teamwork, and strategic planning required for success. He described how setting clear goals, maintaining a strong mission, and establishing solid administrative foundations have enabled MPWB’s meaningful growth through partnerships, educational initiatives, and engagement with colleagues in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). He emphasized that true success lies in helping others grow through collaboration, shared learning, and responsiveness to community needs while recognizing ongoing challenges such as administrative workload, sustaining participation, and securing funding.

Parminder Basran, PhD (Former Director of Communications), underscored the importance of democratizing access to medical physics education and resources worldwide. He highlighted MPWB’s global initiatives to bridge learning gaps, especially in LMICs, by making high-quality training materials freely available. Dr. Basran introduced the MPWB–Cornell Educational Partnership, which is developing interactive AR/VR simulations of linear accelerators and CT scanners to enhance radiation therapy education. The central message “bring tools and technology to the learners, not the learners to the tools and technology” captured the need for accessible, context-appropriate innovation. His presentation also invited collaboration through contributions to the Open Syllabus Project, sharing radiation safety procedures, reviewing online resources, and identifying LMIC partners for evaluating AR/VR tools. Overall, Dr. Basran’s message called for collective action to expand open-access learning and strengthen global capacity in medical physics education.

Finally, Tomas Kron, PhD (Past President), explored how regional collaboration can strengthen the mission of MPWB and similar international organizations. Drawing on MPWB’s expanding global initiatives including an education series that has reached over 1,200 participants from 85 countries and collaborative research projects involving representatives from 21 LMICs Dr. Kron emphasized the growing importance of regional engagement. He discussed how establishing regional chapters or collaborations within similar time zones can enhance coordination, communication, and responsiveness while aligning with MPWB’s global objectives. He identified key challenges for international organizations, including limited coordination among initiatives, inadequate visibility, and the need for greater recognition of volunteer contributions. Proposed solutions included strengthening communication across networks, promoting medical physics within and beyond the profession, sharing resources such as hardware and software, and fostering mentorship in leadership and soft skills. Dr. Kron concluded that although coordination across global efforts remains complex, the opportunities for impact through regional empowerment and global collaboration are vast—reinforcing MPWB’s central role in connecting physicists worldwide to advance equitable access to medical physics education and practice.

Looking Ahead As we navigate this transition, I am excited about what lies ahead for MPWB. With your engagement, we can continue to be a vibrant community of learning, service, and global partnership. I encourage you to join a workgroup, consider speaking at an event, and stay connected as we work together to advance medical physics for world benefit.

IDMP 2025 Poetry Competition

International Day of Medical Physics

To celebrate International Day of Medical Physics (IDMP), November 7, Medical Physics for World Benefits (MPWB) is holding a competition for medical physicists all over the world.

As in 2024, we are holding a Poem competition. Poems should have some relation to medical physics and consist of no more than 14 lines, which fits anything from Haikus to Sonnets. Contributions can be in any language – if in a language other than English please attempt to provide also an English translation and more importantly an audio recording of the Poem to allow the judges to appreciate rhythm and sound. Anyone can contribute up to two poems with a deadline of November 30, 2025 (UTC – 11hours time zone). The board of MPWB will decide on a shortlist of winners to be presented at the Annual General Meeting of MPWB in December.

The three contributions judged to be best by the panel will receive a pair of unique MPWB socks as ultimate fashion accessory.

Results of the 2025 MPWB Board Elections

The Medical Physics for World Benefit (MPWB) and AAPM Global Early Career Research Subcommittee (GECRSC) are excited to announce the recipients of the MPWB/AAPM Awards for Virtual Access to the AAPM 2025 Annual Meeting. This initiative is designed to increase access to high-quality scientific, professional, and educational content for medical physicists and early career researchers (ECRs) in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).

MPWB 2025 Board Elections

MPWB 2025 Board Elections

MPWB has two progression and two open board positions requiring election for 2025. This News Brief is to open online voting by full members in good standing (paid dues for 2025). Voting will open on May 26, 2025 and close on June 2, 2025.

The progression election endorses Afua Yorke to progress from President-elect to President, and Tomas Kron to move from President to Past President. While they have been in the presidential succession line for the last two years, their progression to the further stages requires a membership vote for fulfillment.

The candidates for the two open directors’ positions (president-elect and fund raising and engagement) have been recommended by the nominations committee and approved by the Board. We are pleased to share information about the two outstanding candidates.

For President-Elect:

Gabriela Stroian. Ph.D. , a Medical Physicist in the Cedar Cancer Centre at the McGill University Health Centre and an Assistant Professor in the Medical Physics Unit, Gerald Bronfman Department of Oncology at McGill University.

Dr. Stroian was born in Bucharest, Romania where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Theoretical Physics from the University of Bucharest in 1997. She continued her studies in France where she obtained a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics at the Montpellier II University in 2001. Her inclination towards medicine resulted in a switch from theoretical physics to medical physics and the completion in 2005 of a M.Sc. degree in Medical Physics at McGill University. In 2008, she became a medical physicist in the Division of Radiation Oncology at the Jewish General Hospital and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Oncology at McGill. After studying healthcare management between 2016 and 2018, she obtained a master’s degree in international health leadership from Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill University. She is a medical physicist with the Cedar Cancer Centre at the McGill University Health Centre since 2018.

Gabriela is co-leading several quality improvement projects within the Radiation Oncology Department and is heavily involved in medical physics education at postgraduate and residency levels. She is actively participating in the curriculum development for both Medical Physics and Radiation Oncology Residency Training Programs at McGill University.

Dr. Stroian has been actively involved in advancing education in Haiti through roles as an Associate Professor and Board Member at the Institut des Sciences, des Technologies et des Études Avancées d’Haïti (ISTEAH) since 2017. Additionally, as a Board Member of the Société de développement international (SDI) du Pôle d’innovation du grand Nord (PIGraN) within GRAHN, she contributes to initiatives fostering sustainable development and scientific progress in Haiti

In her spare time, Gabriela leads an active lifestyle engaging in a variety of activities including trail running, biking, swimming, snowshoeing and backcountry skiing.

For Director of Fund Raising and Engagement:

Dr. Ghada Aldosary spent her early years in Canada, then moved to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) where she graduated with a B.Sc. degree in Physics from King Saud University in 2010. She was a summer research student at GSI Helmholtz Graduate School for Hadron and Ion International Summer Research Program in Darmstadt, Germany. She then worked at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, KSA. In 2011, she moved back to Canada where she completed a M.Sc. degree at McGill University, followed by a clinical residency at the McGill University Health Centre. She then obtained certification in radiation oncology physics by the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine. Her PhD work at Carleton University focused on improving treatment accuracy of accelerated partial breast irradiation. In 2022, she earned an Executive Diploma in Inclusive Leadership the University of Toronto. Dr. Aldosary worked at The Ottawa Hospital in Ottawa prior to moving to the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO) in 2023.

Dr. Aldosary is currently a senior medical physicist at King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital, Ministry of the National Guard Health Affairs in Riyadh, KSA, where she serves as breast radiotherapy physics lead and brachytherapy physics lead. She leads several clinical and research projects, as well as educational programs for a multidisciplinary audience. Dr. Aldosary is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, where she teaches and supervises students. Dr. Aldosary is dedicated to extending access to training and mentorship of students and early career professionals in the EMRO region.

Dr. Aldosary is an active member of international and EMRO professional organizations, and serves as Chair of the AAPM Arab Medical Physics Subcommittee. In recognition of her contributions to the Canadian medical physics community, Dr. Aldosary was awarded the inaugural 2021 COMP CWC-IDEA Award for Excellence in Advancing Inclusiveness, Diversity, Equity and Access. In 2024, Dr. Aldosary founded MedPhys NextGen, a medical physics outreach program that targets undergraduate STEM students in the EMRO region. Through collaborative efforts, Dr. Aldosary aims to facilitate and bridge local and international efforts to advance global healthcare equity.

MPWB/AAPM Awards for Virtual Access to AAPM 2025 Annual Meeting

We are pleased to announce the MPWB/AAPM Awards for Virtual Access to the AAPM 2025 Annual Meeting, a collaborative initiative between Medical Physics for World Benefit (MPWB) and the AAPM Global Early Career Research Subcommittee (GECRSC).

These awards aim to broaden access to high-quality scientific, professional, and educational content for medical physicists and early career researchers (ECRs) in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Selected awardees will receive free registration to the On-Demand content of the AAPM 2025 Annual Meeting, available starting July 27, 2025. Recordings of each session will be accessible within 24 hours and remain available for one year.

Award Categories:

MPWB Access Awards: For clinical medical physicists from LMICs with a minimum of 2 years of hospital experience.
ECR Access Awards: For early career researchers in LMICs who are within 5 years of completing their terminal degree and are actively involved in research.

Dr. Ramiro Pino is a Chief Radiation Physicist, Director of the Medical Physics Residency Program, Houston Methodist Hospital, Texas. Associate Professor of Medical Physics at the Academic Institute, Houston Methodist Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical College, New York.

He has contributed to the development of new technologies in Radiation Oncology, particularly in radiation dose calculations, authoring two patents, one of them implemented in a commercial product. He has clinical and research experience in areas of Therapeutic Medical Physics such as cranial and extracranial stereotactic radiosurgery, as well as high and low dose rate brachytherapy and in commissioning radiation treatment machines and treatment planning systems.

Virtual Mentoring Boosts Medical Physics Community

A new study published in the Journal of Medical Physics: "Virtual Mentoring for Medical Physicists: Results From an International Pilot Program Between AAPM and SAMP." This innovative pilot, launched in 2022 by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and the Southeastern AAPM (SAMP), explored how virtual mentoring can bridge gaps for medical physicists worldwide.

The findings? Virtual mentorship works! Early-career physicists reported enhanced professional growth, stronger networks, and increased confidence— all through accessible, online guidance from seasoned experts. This program not only fosters global collaboration but also paves the way for a more connected and supported medical physics community.

Dear members and friends of MPWB,

Thanks a lot to those who have attended one of our two Annual General Meetings (AGMs). I hope you found it informative and we would love to get feedback in particular regarding things we can improve.

This is my last message as MPWB president and I am delighted to hand over to Afua Yorke who is a great person coming with new ideas while knowing the organisation well and building on present strengths. MPWB will enter 2025 with a new structure involving a management committee and a few other working groups which will allow more members to get involved in activities. Also, the work involving more regular communications as per the schedule shared at the AGM and particularly the update of our webpage is on our agenda. The first communication will be a newsletter in January 2025 and I would like to encourage you to submit a contribution. We would be particularly interested in publishing thoughts about the medical physics profession in your country.

Given the success of our IDMP poetry competition I am aiming to establish a poetry corner on the webpage and hope all contributors are happy to see their work on our webpage. We will contact authors about it.

Stepping down from the presidency will allow me to devote more time to actual projects and I have a few things in mind. Setting up clinical training programs is one of my interests and I will have an opportunity to contribute to an IAEA workshop with this topic in Hanoi early January. I also hope to get more involved with mentorship and support John Schreiner in building on the results of our survey a few years back (https://journals.lww.com/jomp/fulltext/2024/10000/virtual_mentoring_for_medical_physicists__results.23.aspx). This is an important topic and I wonder how much practical work could be facilitated in this way using for example life video communication.

Two years of chairing MPWB meetings at early hours in the morning taught me the importance of time zones. In this context, I would like to explore if there is enough interest to establish a MPWB chapter in the Asia Pacific region. How this can work and how it can actually add to the number of excellent medical physics organisations in the region is something to be explored.

I would love to hear from you regarding these thoughts.

Finally, my sincere thanks to all MPWB members and supporters for giving me the opportunity to contribute to the organisation. I should particularly thank my fellow board members for their support and a number of previous board members who continue to carry the organisation forward.

International Day of Medical Physics

To celebrate International Day of Medical Physics (IDMP), November 7, Medical Physics for World Benefits (MPWB) is holding a competition for medical physicists all over the world.

We are launching a Poem competition. Poems should have some relation to medical physics and consist of no more than 14 lines, which fits anything from Haikus to Sonnets. Contributions can be in any language – if in a language other than English please attempt to provide also an English translation and more importantly an audio recording of the Poem to allow the judges to appreciate rhythm and sound. Anyone can contribute up to two poems with a deadline of November 30, 2024 (UTC – 11hours time zone)^*. The board of MPWB will decide on a shortlist of winners to be presented at the Annual General Meeting of MPWB in December.

The three contributions judged to be best by the panel will receive a pair of unique MPWB socks as ultimate fashion accessory.

To get into the mood, here is a Haiku example:

Dear colleagues and friends,

Volunteer organisations such as MPWB are an interesting lot. I had the privilege to be involved with a few medical physics ones and find some common features which are both challenging and encouraging:

1.       Working with colleagues who share similar expertise, experiences and aspirations is a privilege and pleasure.
2.       Most of us have daytime jobs – I am always aware that there is so much more I could do for MPWB (alas, there are risks to control, people to manage, QA to be organised and time sheets to be signed at the home front)
3.       Volunteer organisations rely on their members. There is no shortage of good will by everyone, but practicalities make involvement of members often difficult in particular in an organisation that is truly international. Time zones, cultural differences and the complexity of some tasks call for patience.
4.       Medical Physics is much more important than most people think. In most health care systems, there is appreciation of the importance of technology and computing; however, awareness of medical physics as the key profession in this space is often lacking. Therefore, medical physics is often an afterthought and not part of the initial planning.
5.       Keeping all this in mind we have tried to hit the refresh button in MPWB to:
a.       Introduce a management committee
b.       Try to be more active and regular in terms of communication
c.       Create a new logo
d.       Upgrade/update the webpage
e.       Launch a Poem competition for IDMP (more to be announced on IDMP)

Give us a bit of time and watch this space – we are committed to make this happen. Most importantly, we would like to get all members involved: if you have any ideas or would like to support a particular initiative, please get in touch.

At the COMP ASM 2024, a presentation titled "Levelling the Playing Field: Access to Resources for Medical Physicists Everywhere" highlighted the initiatives and progress of Medical Physics for World Benefit (MPWB). The presentation focused on MPWB's vision, mission, and recent activities.

Key Points from the Presentation:

1. MPWB Vision and Mission:

- Vision: A world with access to safe and effective applications of physics and technology in medicine.

- Mission: Support the effective and safe use of physics and technologies in medicine, especially in low-to-middle income countries (LMICs) through education, training, mentoring, and collaboration.

2. Organizational Structure and Leadership:

- Founded by Jacob Van Dyk and co-founders Yakov Pipman, Jerry White, David Wilkins, Parminder Basran, and Robert Jeraj.

- Current Board of Directors includes: Tomas Kron (Australia), PresidentAfua Yorke (USA), President-elect

John Schreiner (Canada), Past-President

5. Webinar Series:

- MPWB has hosted numerous webinars covering topics like radionuclide dosimetry, high dose rate brachytherapy, and the impact of COVID-19 on medical physics practice.

6. New MSc Program in Kenya:

- In collaboration with Academic Without Borders (AWB) and Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST), MPWB assisted in developing a new MSc in Medical Physics program in Kenya.

- The program was approved by MUST and is awaiting full approval from the Kenyan Commission for University Education (CUE).

7. Virtual Mentorship Program:

- MPWB aims to establish a sustainable mentorship program with defined goals, performance metrics, and global reach.

- Initial efforts are focused on developing policies and matching mentors with mentees.

8. Other Key Projects:

- Participation in the first Jamaican Association for Physics in Medicine sponsored Caribbean Conference.

- Collaboration with training programs in Argentina and coordination with the Federation of African Medical Physics Organizations (FAMPO) to enhance medical physics training in Malawi, Zimbabwe, and beyond.

9. Open Syllabus Project:

- Addressing the need for accessible, high-quality educational resources for medical physics residents in LMICs.

- Development of an open syllabus capturing core competencies and linking to online educational resources.

MPWB Awards Grant Access to AAPM 66th Annual Meeting 2024 Content

The Medical Physics for World Benefits (MPWB) initiative announces the offering of awards to provide access to the educational, professional, and scientific resources of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) 66th annual meeting, scheduled for 2024. The primary objectives of this initiative are twofold: to enhance access to high-quality resources for medical physicists from low and middle-income countries (LMIC), and to foster the advancement of medical physics within their respective nations.

Successful applicants will receive a complimentary registration granting access to the content of the AAPM 66th annual meeting, accessible on-demand. Recordings of sessions will be available on the meeting platform, with post-session availability for up to 24 hours. Registrants will retain access to all recordings for one year following the event, facilitating flexible viewing.

To be considered for the award, interested individuals must complete and submit the online form "APPLICATION FORM MPWB sponsored AAPM".

The application deadline is June 7th, 2024. Applicants must meet specific criteria, including residing and working as a medical physicist in an LMIC, possessing a minimum of two years of relevant work experience, and demonstrating a need to attend the meeting.

Evaluation of applications will prioritize active members of MPWB, medical physicists from the lowest income countries according to World Bank data, and those who have not previously received the award. Additionally, consideration will be given to achieving geographical diversity and gender balance among awardees.

The number of awards granted will be limited, with successful applicants notified of their selection by July 8th, 2024. Registration for the AAPM meeting will be completed by July 15th, 2024, ahead of the meeting's commencement on July 21st, 2024.

He also serves as an ACR ROPA surveyor and volunteer at the ABR. Prior to his career in healthcare, Navneeth earned a degree in Industrial Engineering, bringing a unique perspective to his work as a medical physicist. Currently, he works at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard medical school teaching hospital in Boston. His passion lies in improving patient safety and refining clinical processes through innovative projects.

MPWB Awards For Virtual Access to 2023 AAPM Annual Meeting UPDATES

MPWB once again received great interest from Medical Physicists in low to middle-income countries expressing an interest in attending the AAPM ASM virtually. We are currently reviewing applications and hope to alert applicants soon on their status.
Last year, we were able to secure funds for approximately 40 medical physicists to attend, and this year our numbers look relatively the same.

MPWB is please to again offer medical physicist colleagues around the world an opportunity to attend the virtual component of the 2023 Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Association of Medical Physicists.
We will sponsor free registration to access the AAPM meeting's virtual content. Registrants will be able to access all recordings for 1 year following the meeting.
Candidates who comply with all the requirements shall be scored according to an evaluation criteria that includes membership with MPWB, minimum 2 years of work experience, working in a low to middle income country as per the World Bank 2022 data.

While it has been some time since the AAPM 2022 conference, we have a few updates to share.

We are happy to share that MPWB approved applications from 49 medical physicists from developing countries to virtually attend the AAPM conference in Washington in July. We hope to share some of the supportive comments from these virtual attendees in our next newsletter.

Medical Physics for World Benefit is performing an international survey to investigate whether the Medical Physics community considers virtual mentoring to be of benefit to the community, especially for under-resourced contexts? MPWB 2021 Call for Nominations

At the end of 2021, two Board members will be finishing their terms of office: Parminder Basran (Director of Communications) and David Wilkins (Secretary/Treasurer).

On the recommendation from the MPWB Nominating Committee, the Board is recommending that these two members stand to be elected for another 3 year term.

According to the MPWB policy and procedures, we are required to post a call for nominations from our membership at least 30 days before an election. Thus, this announcement formalizes the request for further nominations with a deadline of 30 September 2021. If you would like to stand for one of these positions, please contact the Chair of the Nominating Committee, Yakov Pipman.

Worldwide Innovations in Medical Physics Early Career Competition - Deadline Approaching

Started in 1979, the annual Winter Institute of Medical Physics (WIMP) provides a unique environment for participants from academics, industry, and clinics large and small to come together and share their ideas and work on a variety of topics in oncology, imaging, education, and technology.

A major outreach component of the 2021 Winter Institute of Medical Physics meeting will be the Worldwide Innovations in Medical Physics (WIMP @ WIMP 2021) competition. The goal is to showcase innovations in science, technology, and novel “global” approaches to teaching and training being investigated and developed by early career medical physicists around the world. The competition is open to individuals nearly finished or within 5 years of having finished their advanced degree, fellowship, or training program! Cash prizes of $250 USD for up to 20 semi-finalists and $1000 USD for up to 8 finalists will be awarded. First submissions are due February 12th, 2021.

We are extremely pleased to announce the following results from the election results for the upcoming vacant MPWB board positions.

For President-Elect - Dr. Tomas Kron (2 year term).

Starting on 2021, he will be replacing Dr. John Schreiner, who will assume his new position of President, and Dr. Yakov Pipman will assume his new position of Past-President in 2021. Dr. Jacob Van Dyk (current Past-President) will be transitioning off the MPWB Board.

For Director of Fundraising - Dr. Eduard Gershkevitsh, Ph.D. (3 year term)

This year we have two open board positions for 2020 and will be holding an online election for full members in good standing (paid dues for 2020). Voting will open on September 2, 2020 and close on September 30, 2020. The nominations committee and board have approved the following two candidates to sit for election for these upcoming vacant positions.

We are pleased to share information about these outstanding candidates. Members will receive notification for casting their votes.

For President-Elect:

Tomas Kron, Ph.D.

Professor and Director, Department of Physical Sciences, Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute, Melbourne, Australia.

Tomas has had much international involvement with multiple activities especially with the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) involving many expert missions, training events and several QUATRO audits. He has also been working in the International Medical Physics Certification Board (IMPCB) since 2013 and chairs the Science Committee for the Asia-Oceania Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (AFOMP).

In 2013, he was awarded the Distinguished Services Award of the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM) and nominated as one of 50 medical physicists by the IOMP who had a significant impact on medical physics in the last 50 years.

In 2014, he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for services to medicine, research and education.

His areas of interest include dosimetry of ionising radiation, image guided radiotherapy, clinical trials and education of medical physicists. He has published more than 280 papers in refereed journals and given more than 80 invited conference presentations.

For Director of Fund Raising:

Eduard Gershkevitsh, Ph.D.

Chief Medical Physicist, North Estonia Regional Hospital, Tallinn, Estonia and visiting lecturer at Tallinn Technical University and Tartu HealthCare College.

Eduard is a member of the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO) and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM). From 2011 to 2020 he served on the ESTRO Physics Committee. He has participated as faculty in ESTRO teaching courses and numerous expert missions for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in different continents related to treatment planning system and linac commissioning, QC/QA activities, and national and international audits. From 2015 to 2018, he served on the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) Awards and Honours Committee.

In 2019, Eduard was a Medical Physics Consultant at the IAEA Standard Dosimetry Laboratory in Seibersdorf, Austria. He has 18 peer-reviewed publications.

The MPWB board expresses solidarity with all affected by systemic injustice and racism and supports the principles of the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

We recognize these recent weeks have been difficult, and we know that they have also been deeply painful for some friends and members of our community. Not all of us can know the depth of this pain, but MPWB can offer support and efforts to work towards change. We share in the outrage, we echo the calls for change, and we underscore our commitment to inclusion and anti-racism.

Our mission is to support activities which will yield effective and safe use of physics and technologies in medicine, especially in low to middle income countries. A core value of MPWB is Equal Access, where all citizens deserve access to effective and safe healthcare irrespective of their gender, religion, race or income. Yet we know that even in developed countries, access to healthcare and justice is not always equal.

Another core value of MPWB is Mutual Respect, where we aim to be sensitive to local circumstances, customs and cultural diversity. Yet we know that even in the communities of developed countries, there remain significant challenges in achieving mutual respect.

To accept the status quo of racism through silence and inaction is to be complicit in its perpetuation. To make changes in our communities, we must make changes in attitudes and be proactive. Each of us can educate ourselves on racism, systemic injustice and the effects they have in healthcare. Through our combined efforts we can make a change.

We recognize we do not have the answers to the challenges we face today. Together we can learn and work to create better paths for improving diversity, inclusion and belonging in our communities. MPWB is here to listen, learn, and affirm our value in mutual respect and equal access to safe healthcare in our communities.

International Medical Physics Guidelines for COVID-19

MPWB is hosting a second webinar entitled “International Medical Physics Guidelines for COVID-19.” The Asia-Oceania Federation of Medical Physics (AFOMP) has developed guidelines on Radiation Oncology Operation during COVID-19. MPWB Statement on COVID-19 Pandemic

As our community faces uncertain challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic, MPWB feels obliged to recognize this and share some important thoughts with our community.

First, it is of paramount importance that you follow directives of your local health authorities. Many jurisdictions are implementing strategies to mitigate the spread of the virus through social distancing and density reduction measures. The World Health Organization has helpful information on the public and health care workers. Please refer to your local and national health authorities for local directives and best practices. As healthcare workers, we have a collective responsibility to the patients and the public we serve.

Second, in a time of crisis it is always helpful to undertake some self-reflection. Many lives are being disrupted with these challenges: daycare closures, workplace changes, and many of you may be feeling the direct impacts of the virus yourselves. These events are occurring at a rapid rate and can be unsettling. We want to assure the MPWB community to ‘Keep Calm and Curie On!’. We encourage you to stay healthy physically and mentally! The US CDC has resources for the latter.

These challenges will certainly impact the medical physics community. Many centers are unable to operate to their capacity, and others have their resources stretched thin. There is evidence that these challenges will persist for several weeks, if not months. This can be particularly frustrating for Medical Physicists who are natural problem solvers. We are particularly concerned over how this pandemic will affect low and middle income countries and their ability to safely deliver patient care. If you have ideas or thoughts on how we might be able to help solve these problems, we encourage you to share them with your local leaders. Please also feel free to use our Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn social- media channels to share your thoughts. If you have thoughts or suggestions on how MPWB might be able to help with this pandemic, please share them through our social media channels or through medphyswb@gmail.com.

Open Syllabus Project Update

Open Syllabus Project Volunteer Drive:

The Open Syllabus project is now underway and a Steering Committee has been assembled. We are starting the project for Radiation Oncology Residents by creating training modules as defined by the IAEA. These modules are topics covered in a residency program. Specific modules are

Radiation Safety and Protection
Radiation Dosimetry
Radiation Therapy-External Beam
External Beam Treatment Planning
Brachytherapy
Professional Studies and Quality Management
Research, Development and Teaching

The next step is to assemble teams for each module and identify, collate, and prioritize online resources that cover learning objectives in each of the modules. These resources include things like presentations, YouTube videos, and other easily accessible online resources which can be hyperlinked to learning objectives. We are looking for volunteers to help collate, organize, and prioritize this content. If you have expertise in one of the following areas and are willing to volunteer your time, please email us at medphyswb@gmail.com. Expectations for volunteers include information flow via email, attending video/teleconference meetings, finding and prioritizing content for the Open Syllabus. Please let us know if you have a preference for which module you would like to volunteer for.

Dr Van Dyk receives inaugural IDMP Award from IOMP

Earlier this month, MPWB was excited to learn that our very own Jake was chosen to receive the International Day of Medical Physics (IDMP) Award for 2019!

The award "recognizes excellence in Medical Physics with a particular view of promoting medical physics to a larger audience and highlighting the contributions medical physicists make for patient care."

The IOMP represents over 25,000 medical physicists worldwide and 87 adhering national member organizations, including MPWB as an affiliated organization.

Annual membership meeting MPWB will hold its annual membership meeting on Tuesday 31 July 2018 from 12:15 to 1:45 in room Music Row 6 on Level Two in the Omni Nashville Hotel at the annual meeting of the AAPM in Nashville, TN. International Day of Medical Physics - 2017

7 November marks the International Day of Medical Physics. The day celebrates the birthday of a pioneer in the field, Marie Curie (1867–1934), recipient of the 1903 Nobel prize in Physics, shared with Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel, and another in Chemistry in 1910 for discovering Radium and Polonium, and isolating and studying Radium.

Her career stimulated profound changes in diagnostic and therapeutic medicine. During World War 1, she help pioneered the concept of portable x-ray imaging—devices known as “Petite Curies”—throughout Europe. The impact of Radium in the treatment of cancer (via brachytherapy) cannot be overstated. She was a scientific pioneer in the truest sense.

In many ways, Marie Curie provides the perfect starting point in defining the core facets of a medical physicist. It all started with intelligence, innovation, critical thinking, and an undeniable passion for excellence.

She was an incredibly generous person, gifting the gold from her Nobel prizes to the government in support of the war effort. For her outstanding contributions in times of crisis, she was a board member of the Red Cross.

In many ways, Marie Curie's legacy serves as a measure of success for MPWB:

To support activities which will yield effective and safe use of physics and technologies in medicine through advising, training, demonstrating and/or participating in medical physics-related activities, especially in low-to-middle income countries.

The difference today is that we all know how to use radiation in helping people, but we have significant challenges in getting that help to the people who need it most.

We have some exciting projects underway in achieving some of these goals, as noted in some of our earlier blog-posts.

We want to thank all of our supporters for their contribution in making the world a bit safer, and helping improve access to healthcare in our world.

MPWB was featured in a recent article in medicalphysicsweb.org.

The 2015 Lancet Oncology Commission report, Expanding Global Access to Radiotherapy, indicated that more than 22,000 medical physicists will be needed over the next 20 years to address the rising cancer crisis in low-to-middle income countries (LMICs), if equal access to radiation therapy is to be available. Its "Call for Action" on human resources indicated that 6000 medical physicists should be trained in LMICs by 2025. The problem is that many LMICs lack access to medical physics education and training programmes.

MPWB meetings at the AAPM and COMP ASMs

Medical Physics for World Benefit (MPWB) will be holding information / membership meetings at both the COMP and AAPM annual scientific meetings.

COMP: Thursday 13 July 2017 at 5:30 pm in 'Confederation I' of the Westin Hotel in Ottawa.

AAPM: Tuesday 1 August 2017 at 12:15 pm in 'Mineral Hall A' of the Hyatt Regency Denver (see AAPM Committees and Activities Schedule).

As a heads up, MPWB will be opening the website for 'formal' membership applications in the near future. Stay tuned for the announcement when it is ready!
